SSL Reminder

Never miss the expiry of an SSL certificate again with the SSL Reminder from SYSSY.

With one click, you can set an SSL reminder for all websites that you have monitored by SYSSY. You can specify how many days before expiry you would like to be reminded and SYSSY will email you and an app notification.

This way you can ensure that no website overlooks the renewal of the certificate.

Create the reminder for all your websites or for each project separately.

You can set this for each project:

  • When the reminder should be sent
  • To which email address the reminder should be sent
  • Whether an app notification should also be sent

Let's Encrypt will discontinue the SSL reminder from June 2025, so an alternative is needed. You can read about this at Let's Encrypt here: https://letsencrypt.org/2025/01/22/ending-expiration-emails/

Questions regarding SSL certificates

FAQ

Warum braucht man ein SSL-Zertifikat?

SSL stands for “Secure Sockets Layer” and ensures that communication between the browser and server is encrypted. An SSL certificate is installed on the web server and if it is valid, HTTPS is used instead of HTTP to access the website. The “S” at the end of HTTPS stands for “Secure”. A secure connection to a website can be recognized by a lock or key symbol in the address bar of the browser.

A valid certificate encrypts data, such as login data, form data or payment data, before it is sent to the server. This means that the data is not transmitted in plain text, making it more difficult for people or machines intercepting the communication to decrypt a message. When transmitting confidential data or payment details, an SSL certificate and the validity of the certificate are an absolute must. Expired certificates pose a security risk, which is why websites with expired certificates are blocked by default in most browsers.

SSL certificates not only protect the user's data, however:

  • Data transfer is encrypted and makes it more difficult for hackers to find out data
  • Search engines like websites with an active SSL certificate and it can have a positive influence on ranking
  • The website appears trustworthy to users because this is displayed in the browser

Why does it make sense to monitor the SSL certificate?

Expired SSL certificates represent a security risk and should be avoided as far as possible.

If a certificate expires, the data transfer from the browser to the server is no longer encrypted. This means that data such as passwords and credit card details are transmitted in plain text and can be read very easily by hackers. It is therefore important that certificates are renewed in good time and never expire. Certificates are usually renewed automatically on rented webspace, but if you operate your own server, you may have to deal with the renewal of certificates yourself. In this case, it is important to keep an overview of the certificates and know when which certificate needs to be renewed.

SSL monitoring and the SSL reminder from SYSSY can provide support here. On the one hand, the SSL certificates are checked daily so that there is an overview of the existing certificates at all times. On the other hand, a reminder can be set for each project. The reminder sends an e-mail and/or a push notification directly to the mobile phone X days (configurable) before a certificate expires.

When do I need the SSL reminder?

The SSL reminder makes sense if you manage SSL certificates yourself, e.g. if you operate your own servers.

With a rented webspace, the SSL certificates and their automatic renewal are usually included, and you don't have to worry. However, this does not mean that everything always works 100%. It has also happened that the automatic renewal has not worked. If this happens, SYSSY also recognizes that the certificate has expired and sends an email and/or app notification so that you are notified at the latest when the problem occurs and can act quickly.
